Getting Massage to Help You Run Your Marathon

Getting Massage to Help You Run Your Marathon

It is easier to succeed at your marathon with good preparation.  Some people take on their big run with a bit of a Gung-Ho approach and have a great run and that is fantastic.  For most people this won’t work and they will collect injuries and struggle.

Training will ensure marathon success – it’s time soon to apply for next year’s London Marathon, start preparing now. You can download training schedules from the Virgin London Marathon website.

As well as building your training slowly and sensibly you should alter your nutrition.  Hard working bodies need good quality food to power them and to build and repair muscles.  Above all find yourself a well qualified Remedial Massage professional, get recommendations from my governing body, the ISRM.

If you live in Cambridgeshire come and see me. I am always thrilled to see a client through the process. It is much better to keep your muscles in good condition with regular massage, I can find potential injury sites in your muscles before they even become a problem. It is much easier to avoid injury than to try and recover from one. I have a wealth of advice and experience (and my own cherished medal so you know I have shared your pain).

Mostly people come to see me when they are on the verge of giving up on their running because they are plagued by injury. It is a fantastic thing to work  together with a client in this situation,  get them back to training and even, as has happened, see them achieve a personal best in their marathon, but don’t take a chance with your big event. Come and see me and together we will see you run your best marathon!

Muscle pain and stiffness – the remedy

Muscle pain and stiffness -the remedy

So your muscles are feeling very sore, tight and stiff. You are getting lower back pain or hip pain and its’s limiting your mobility. You are no longer able to do your usual exercise and even walking makes you hurt. Your inclination is to avoid exercise because the muscle pain is so troublesome. you checked with your medical practitioner and you have been sent away with painkillers. You are frustrated and very sore and it’s affecting your whole life!

What can you do about this? A lot more than you may think. Immobility is actually your worst enemy. What you need to do is get moving again. A study by the engineering dept at the University of Michigan showed a 69% decrease in the strength of tendons and ligaments over a period of just 9 weeks of imposed immobility. What is more shocking is that it took even longer to recover the losses when mobility was restored. A prime case for use it or lose it!

What to do then, it’s a bit chicken or egg isn’t it? Too sore to exercise, so no exercise, so even more sore. Well first of all I advise you to undergo an intensive programme of Remedial Massage. A series of intensive massage treatments will alleviate the worst symptoms and make exercise less uncomfortable. Deep Soft Tissue Massage can make a huge difference to muscle pain, clients are often amazed at just how much better they feel and how quickly.

I would be looking for problem areas which are causing the most restriction to movement. I would also do some detective work to discover what it was that you have been doing that has led to the problems with your muscles in the first place and if we can’t remove those causes, I will give you some advice on managing things so that you are more comfortable for more of the time. I will also give you some simple exercises and stretches to incorporate into your life to get you on your way back to mobility.

Massage is amazing in its ability to help with muscle repair, if you want to be an agile, healthy 80 year old you need to be putting things in place before you no longer have a choice!

Avoiding Muscular and Low Back Injury

Avoiding Muscular and Low Back Injury

One of the most important things I believe, in keeping yourself fit and healthy is to actually try and avoid muscular injury in the first place. If you are a sportsperson or even just wanting to lead a fairly active life, you should be doing your utmost to avoid getting injured in the first place. This is because rehabilitating an injury is so much harder than avoiding one  and an injured muscle is much more likely to get injured again in the future.

How then do you prevent injury? Well, firstly prepare. If you are taking up a new sport or going back to one you enjoy after a break. Even doing a weekend of heavy gardening. Spend some time getting into shape – or better still, make sure you are always in good shape. A fit body will perform better at all tasks.

Keep your core muscles strong, keep your legs strong and flexible, make sure your glutes work properly – your massage therapist can help you with all these things. A good remedial massage therapist can tell you if your glutes fire properly and what to do if they don’t. Your glutes are the powerhouse of your body. Your stability and strength in movement come from your glutes, it is important that they work properly. I have encountered people actually exercising their glutes but it being a complete waste of time because only their hamstrings were doing the work – and this is not rare! Lots of you don’t actually use your glutes to power you.

Having remedial massage will help to identify where your problems are, it can uncover things which you didn’t even know were a problem and things which are going to cause you mobility issues as you get older. A remedial massage therapist can offer advice on strengthening and stretching, which exercises to do and which muscles are weak. The bonus is you will also get trouble spots ironed out and you will feel very good afterwards. Deep soft tissue massage of the type offered by remedial massage therapists will help to ease out muscular pain and tension and leave you feeling like you have a new body.
